Expert Tutor: Dr Qasim Akram
Dr Akram is an experienced Consultant Rheumatologist and General Physician. His NHS practice is based at Stepping Hill Hospital, and he has also a busy private practice at the Spire Regency Macclesfield and The Wilmslow Hospital.
As well as diagnosing and treating the full range of general rheumatological diseases, his subspecialist interests are Early Inflammatory Arthritis, Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA)/Large Vessel Vasculitis (LVV) and MSK Ultrasound. He currently leads on the unique Stockport Early Inflammatory Arthritis “One Stop Shop’ Ultrasound Clinic. This clinic aims to provide a rapid assessment and diagnosis, on the same day, of patients suspected of having an early inflammatory arthritis. Through this approach, as well as improving speed to diagnosis, early treatment can be initiated leading to better outcomes of potentially disabling musculo-skeletal diseases.
He is a EULAR Ultrasound Instructor and is regularly invited to speak at a local, regional, and national level. He is the founder and director of the ‘The Rheumatology Ultrasound Course-Manchester Workshop’, is a lead instructor for the North West Rheumatology Ultrasound Network and is a British Society of Rheumatology trainer. His main clinical research interests are focused on the use of ultrasound in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis/spondyloarthopathies, crystal arthritis and GCA/LVV.
