Most ultrasound systems often come with general software pre-installed. If you are just doing MSK imaging then most general systems will suit you fine… but

WARNING! Some providers have a “shopping list” of software packages and there are upgraded versions which all come at a cost, so…

Request the standard software that is included and see that you are covered before committing to a purchase! Some things like needle vision or panoramic imaging may be an added extra that come at an additional cost.

If you want to do more specialised examinations, such as cardiac or OBS/GYN, you will likely need to add specific software licenses. Again, these are likely to be individual software licenses rather than packages.

Tip: Double-check EVERYTHING and ask if you are in doubt. The last thing we want is buying a system that doesn’t meet your needs.

What are you paying for?

Essentially, you are paying for a code which is loaded into the computer system which unlocks the module. This code is typically assigned to the serial number of your system so it can’t be used across individual units.

For specialised applications e.g. cardiac, you may need a hardware installation. If this is the case, we advise getting this hardware pre-installed. Upgrading the hardware after the system is purchased and delivered will be more time-consuming, and pricey, so if you can, get it done from the start!!

Other specifications that are worth checking before buying an Ultrasound system:

– Ultrasound Ports
– Date of manufacture
– Condition of system
– Peripherals aka accessories

  • Check the Ultrasound Ports
    The port is where the ultrasound transducer is plugged into the system.
    You may need more than one transducer if you do different types of examinations. To help keep your workflow smooth, having access to more than one port is useful. This means that they can all remain plugged in and can transition between transducers effortlessly on the system.
    The number of ports can differ across models, so make sure you check that you have enough for what you want.

Tip: Make sure you use transducers compatible with your machine!

Often transducers are made and produced specifically to that manufacturer and cannot be crossed over to other brands. We strongly advise using the transducer that the manufacturer sells with that system to avoid damage and voiding any warranty’s!

  • What year was the ultrasound model manufactured?

The age of an ultrasound machine is not too significant, although, it can be! Technology does move on over time and there may be applications you need access to that isn’t available on older systems.

Interfaces and image quality improves over time, but we are talking 8-10 years. The portable market is moving a little quicker and you may become “out-dated” quicker, but what does that even mean!? Let’s be honest, whether a system is 1 month, 1 year or 10 years old, if you get a good quality image and it is functioning as it should – what is there to complain about?

Try and avoid the “I will wait for the next, latest version to come out…” as if you are waiting for that, you will likely never buy a system, as there will “always” be another development around the corner.

So, the more modern systems are becoming backwards compatible. This means that as things move on, both software and hardware are sometimes upgradable.

  • Condition of Used Ultrasound Machines

This is more applicable to the pre-owned/reconditioned ultrasound market. Learn more about whether you should go for new, pre-owned or reconditioned ultrasound here.

With this market, condition of the unit is more important than age, to an extent.

The condition of these systems can vary dramatically, even if systems are the same age. Factors that
can affect this are

  • Its servicing history
  • How the previous owner treated the system, and
  • What it was previously used for.

Most of the time, you will only face cosmetic issues. If this is the case, we would advise that you get the reseller to replace or repaint the panels that have been damaged. This way, when you get the device, it would look (nearly) brand new.

Tip:  We would advise getting a reconditioned system from a reputable company who can give you some warranty cover and show its service history.

  • Accessories or Peripherals

There are a fair few peripherals, or accessories, that you feel you need as well. This can include a printer, biopsy kits, an ECG module, ultrasound gel warmer – the list goes on.

These aren’t always “need-to-haves” but for some applications, it is. When you are speaking to an ultrasound supplier, make them aware of what peripherals you may need, as often these will be an
additional extra.

Tip: These peripherals could be up for negotiation i.e. some things could be “thrown in” to sweeten the deal!

Overall, the performance of ultrasound decreases slightly over time. A good maintenance routine is an option to slow this process down and can be applied to all types of ultrasound machines.
