Our attendance at the Isokinetic Conference 2023

The number of conferences is extensive, so Physiquipe decided not to exhibit this year. The speaker list was high quality, so I decided to make the trip to London to see as many as I could as well as catch up with many friends and colleagues.

I watched some great talks throughout the day at the isokinetic conference and the main thing or ‘take home message’ was that there is SO much information/data and tech out there, it can be truly overwhelming. Research and evidence are crucial in sports medicine, but it is equally, if not more important, to ensure that clinical application on a day-to-day basis is always considered.

As Sue Falsone said in her excellent talk, ‘data is here to stay, so get used to it’, but we should be ‘data-informed rather than data driven’.

I also enjoyed Dr Imtiaz Ahmad’s presentation on AI in elite football. He talked about how important it is for a medical team to do their own due diligence. It is good to ‘be sceptical of new tech as well as open-minded to learn more’. In the same session, chaired by Zaf Iqbal, Jon Fearn discussed his learnings from 20 years in elite sport and one of his final messages was: ‘If you change nothing, nothing will change’.

The volume of data and options out there is so vast, it is very difficult to even the biggest clubs, with the largest resources and medical teams to implement, let alone clinics in private practice.

This seemed to be the consensus from other attendees over the 3-day event, so it made me reflect on where Physiquipe add value…our goal is to simplify the implementation of technology within rehabilitation, which has a genuine impact. We do our own extensive due diligence to ensure that any new system has the potential to add value to the department we present it to. It is then up to the team to decide, as Dr Ahmad stated, if it fits into the environment and has a chance of working, and ask the question: can it make your department better?

After a chat with a Premier League Head of Sports Medicine, we have another product that will fit that bill perfectly! A very enjoyable and productive day all around.
