Guest speaker: Dr George Bownes

Dr George Bownes FFSEM has worked across the UK’s High Performance Network for over 15 years and in doing so he has gained extensive knowledge in sports injury management by working in Premiership Football, International and Premiership Rugby, The Championships at Wimbledon, as well as Winter and Summer Olympic Sports.

Notably, George has been working at Harlequins since 2012 and was Club Doctor when they last won the Premiership in 2021. He has previously worked at Chelsea FC and Southampton FC. Within Olympic Sport he supported Lizzy Yarnold MBE to becoming the first British Winter Olympian to defender an Olympic Gold Medal in 2018 and has been Chief Medical Officer for British Sailing.

George has also worked in residential rehabilitation within the Military at DMRC Headley Court and Stamford Hall as lead clinician for upper limb injuries.

George’s area of interests include upper and lower limb injuries, the spine particularly neck and lumbar spine back pain, tendinopathy of elbow, hamstring, patella and achilles, stress fractures and bone stress injuries, osteoarthritis, diagnostic, interventional ultrasound and shockwave therapy.

George has used his experience in sport and the Military to develop an innovative residential Sports Medicine and Wellness Retreat called Citius, offering bespoke care to aid individuals back to painfree activity after surgery or a sports injury.

Outside of medicine George is a sports enthusiast. He has podiumed at numerous ultras and completed multiple international marathons, multi stage races, ironmans, hyrox and road cycling events.

George is therefore in a unique position of fully understanding the impact injury can have on an individual and is committed to returning people back to higher levels of function and performance after injury.
